Bharat Bandh Banking, insurance, postal services likely to see disruption today

Responding to the call given by a forum of 10 central trade unions, workers across public services sectors including banking, insurance, postal and others are all set to observe strike on July 9. The nationwide strike or ‘Bharat Bandh’ is expected to severely impact routine work in banks, coal mines, post offices, insurance and power sectors. Public transport system is also likely to get affected. Jaiwant Gurway, Chairman of Eastern Maharashtra Bank Employees Association, said that all public sector banks will remain close on July 9 in support of the nationwide strike. “In Vidarbha, more than 15,000 bank employees and officers will take part in the strike which will bring routine work in all the branches to a standstill,” he said.
 
General Secretary of AITUC (WCL) C J Joseph told ‘The Hitavada’ that coal mine workers will participate in the strike on July 9. “We have been preparing for the strike for the past three to four days. Demonstrations will be held at all the areas and WCL headquarters. It will certainly hamper coal production and its dispatch,” he added. More than 60 per cent of the total staff in Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (Mahavitaran), Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (Mahapareshan), and Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Co Ltd (Mahanirmiti) in the region will take active part in the agitation. C M Mourya, Vice-President of Maharashtra State Electricity Workers Federation and AITUC Nagpur District Secretary, said that on July 9, the agitating staff members will raise slogans in support of their demand in front of office of the Regional Director and Chief Engineer on Katol Road. “We will also take out a protect rally from Katol Road Chowk to Samvidhan Chowk where we will join other trade unions,” he said.
 
MSEDCL prepared for bandh  Against backdrop of call for Bharat Bandh on part of trade unions on July 9, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said its prepared and has put in place all arrangements to ensure smooth distribution of power supply. From 26 unions of workers representing the broad spectrum of employees, about 6 have aligned themselves with call given by trade unions to protest against 4 new wage bills proposed by Central Government. A release by MSEDCL said that management has taken note of the bandh call and ensured 24 hours supply. Further, it has appealed citizens to tap the two toll free nos in case of any disruption in power supply. The 6 unions have formed Joint Action Committee and announced support for 24 hours bandh call. The senior officers held two round of talks with the leaders of Committee and Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Lokesh Chandra and Director (Human Resources) Rajendra Pawar showed inclination to resolve the demands raised by the workers. They also appealed employees not to join the strike in larger interest of consumers. To deal with any eventuality, MSEDCL has set up a control room to keep tab on the ground situation. Similar set up is also be working at divisional and Regional offices and they will be taking stock every hour and convey the position to headquarters. The MSEDCL has already sounded manpower supply companies to keep technical workers ready for responding to any emergency situation.

The Maharashtra Sales and Medical Representatives Association (MSMRA), affiliated with CITU and FMRAI, will participate in the nationwide strike on July 9. The strike opposes the implementation of four new labour codes that allegedly undermine job security, minimum wage rights, and social protection. Dilip Deshpande stated that the central trade unions’ joint platform took this decision after reviewing the country’s political situation and attacks on workers’ rights. workers will join the nationwide strike on Wednesday, July 9. A rally will begin from Mor Bhavan at 10 am, raising demands beyond the national call, including implementing the Local Self-Government Ordinance and setting a minimum salary of Rs 26,000. The workers’ union expressed concern that contractual employment is replacing permanent jobs, weakening India’s economic base. The rally aims to pressure the government to ensure secure employment and safeguard workers’ rights. Organisers stressed the need for a welfare-based economic approach that ensures job stability and fair wages for all categories of employees.
 
BMS not to participate in strike
 
While several trade unions across the country are all set to observe a nationwide ‘Bharat Bandh’ on July 9, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has declared that it will not participate in the strike. BMS has also urged its units and affiliates to stay away from the strike, calling it politically motivated. In a press release issued by the State General Secretary of the body Gajanan Gatlewar, said all the members association with the union will stay away from the strike. “However, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh will continue negotiations with the policy-makers for increase in minimum pension amount under Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) 95, and other issues related to the workers,” he said.
