A five-year-old girl was attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Deshpande Layout, Trimurti Nagar, on Saturday. Eight out of ten stray dogs suddenly surrounded and bit her inflicting serious injuries. The girl’s family quickly rushed her to a hospital. According to doctors, her condition is stable.
The injured girl has been identified as Nitya Mongre. Her father works as a security guard at the house of Deepak Malhotra.
The incident occurred at around 5 pm when Nitya was walking on road. She was attacked and injured by stray dogs. Passers-by rescued her in time.
The incident once again underlined increasing danger of stray dogs attacking citizens. Despite growing concerns, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has failed to take adequate action to address the issue. Many people feed stray dogs around residential areas which attracts them which invites more danger for residents, The issue of stray dog attacks has caught the attention of the public and the courts.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is currently pending at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, where the court has instructed the NMC to take strict measures to control the stray dog menace. However, despite the NMC’s claims of taking action, incidents like this continue to occur.
A similar incident occurred when a 12-year-old boy, Jayesh Bokhre, fell to his death off the sixth floor of a building after being chased by a stray dog while playing with his friends on July 8, 2025.
