A week after the tragic road accident on Raksha Bandhan that left a man carrying his wife’s body on a motorcycle, the Deolapar Police have successfully identified and arrested the culprit driver using artificial intelligence technology. On August 10, Amit Bhura Yadav (35), a resident of Lonara village in Nagpur district, was travelling with his wife Gyarsi Amit Yadav (30) towards Karanpur village in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh.

A speeding vehicle hit their motorcycle near Morphata Dargah, on the Nagpur-Jabalpur National Highway, The collision threw Gyarsi off the bike and she came under the wheels of the vehicle. She died on the spot, while Amit survived with minor injuries. Shockingly, the driver did not stop and fled the scene. In complete despair, Amit pleaded with passersby to help carry his wife’s body home. However, no one came forward. Left with no option, Amit tied the body to the back of his motorcycle and began riding towards his village. The heartbreaking scene drew attention when police stopped him near Deolapar and took custody of the body. Based on Amit’s statement, Deolapar Police registered a case under the provisions of BNS. However, the culprit vehicle and driver remained unidentified for days.

Breakthrough with AI - MARVEL

Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Dr Harssh A Poddar, Nagpur Rural Police turned to artificial intelligence. CCTV footage from the accident stretch was analysed with advanced tools - MARVEL. After detailed examination, the vehicle was identified as a red Tata company truck (UP-14/MT 2190). The driver was identified as Satyapal Rajendra (28), resident of Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. Acting swiftly, police seized the vehicle from his residence on August 16. With no initial clue about the culprit, the case seemed difficult to solve. But with AI assistance and persistent investigation, police succeeded in tracing both the vehicle and its driver within a week.

The CCTV footage was analysed using AI - MARVEL (Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), which is an AI system designed to assist the Maharashtra state police force in crime prevention and investigation. The truck was seized on 16 August, and the accused arrested. The accused has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
