The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has admitted suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Forest Department for failing to provide proper medical care to an injured tiger named ‘Chhota Matka’, whose health has been deteriorating in the buffer zone of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. The court expressed concern over the Forest Department’s negligence and has appointed Advocate Yash Sambre as amicus curiae in the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for next week. Chhota Matka suffered serious injuries during a fight with another tiger named Brahma on the night of Buddha Pournima in May 2025.

While Brahma died in the fight, Chhota Matka was left with deep cuts on his leg and severe bleeding. Forest officials only gave him basic treatment, but according to wildlife experts and local observers, his condition has worsened. The tiger is reportedly struggling to walk, and his leg wound has not healed properly. Despite signs of suffering, it is alleged that the Forest Management did not take adequate steps to ensure proper medical care.
