Nava Raipur will become the first solar city in Chhattisgarh, with all Government buildings slated to be powered by solar energy. The initiative, approved by the Atal Nagar, Nava Raipur Development Authority (NRDA), is part of State Government’s move towards renewable energy under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. The project is being spearheaded by the Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA). CREDA’s proposal aims to install a 10 MW solar power plant in the first phase of the plan. This project is in line with the Government of India’s target of producing 500 GW of energy through renewable sources by 2030. The solar plant is projected to produce approximately 160 lakh units of electricity annually.

This initiative is expected to save the Government around Rs 14.50 crore in electricity bills each year, with a total estimated saving of Rs 350 to Rs 400 crore over the plant’s lifetime. The solar power will be used to illuminate ministry headquarters, Government offices, large complexes like the international cricket stadium, the railway station, and streetlights. CREDA has requested Rs 65 crore from State Government to fund the project. This isn’t CREDA’s first venture into solar energy; the agency has previously installed a 2.5 MW plant in various government buildings, including the Mantralaya and Police Headquarters. The upcoming project will significantly expand this effort, positioning Nava Raipur as a leader in sustainable urban development.
