A rare black leopard has been sighted in the Bhandara forest division, specifically in the Lendezari forest area of Mogarkasa reserve forest in Nagpur district recently. This sighting, captured on video by some forest staff, has generated interest among wildlife enthusiasts and experts.
According to a wildlife photographer, a camera trap installed in the vicinity also captured photographs of two black panthers few days ago.
The leopard was seen crossing the road from roadside forest in Lendezari forest area. However, it changed its mind and returned into the bushes after noticing the vehicle approaching closer.
This sighting is notable as it marks the second time a black leopard has been seen in this particular area as the first time it was noticed in 2021 by some forest men.
The sighting is significant because black leopards, also known as melanistic leopards, are a rare sight, and this particular
sighting occurred in an area not previously known for them.
Wildlife experts are emphasising the need to protect the animal and its habitat, and a detailed survey will be conducted to monitor wildlife movement in the area.
The presence of black
leopards were also reported in Pench Tiger Reserve
(PTR) both in Maharashtra and Madha Pradesh side
and also in Tadoba-
Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur.
