  • After challenge, Nagpur city’s score improved by 518.51 marks with the total score at 9981.51 marks

In a significant development, Nagpur city’s Swachh Survekshan Ranking 2024-25 improved from 27 to 22A after challenging the previous ranking. According to the Swachh Survekshan 2024-2025 results, announced by President Droupadi Murmu last month, Nagpur was placed at the 27th position among 40 cities in the million-plus population category. Nagpur got 9,463 out of 12,500 marks. After the challenge, the score improved by 518.51 marks. Now, the city’s total score has improved to 9981.51. Nagpur city got 30% marks under ‘Door to Door Collection of Waste’ and only 1% mark in ‘Source Segregation’ categories previously. Now, in ‘Door to Door Collection of Waste’ category, Nagpur got 90% marks and in ‘Source Segregation’ category it scored 60% marks.

Whereas, in ‘Waste Generation and Processing’ category Nagpur scored 100% marks earlier, and after the challenge the marks revised by 60%. Also, Nagpur got certification in the category of Open Defecation-Free (ODF). Out of 2,500 marks in ODF certification, Nagpur got 1,200 marks and earlier Nagpur scored zero in Garbage Free City (GFC) certification which is now improved by 500 marks. In overall certification, Nagpur scored 1,700 marks out of 2,500. Nashik city holding the 22nd rank in million-plus population category with 10,125 marks. After this revision of marks, Nagpur also shared the rank with 22A marks with 9981.51 score.

Meerut city with 9,741 marks is on 23 rank. If compared to last year’s performance, the assessment team appointed by the Centre gave 98% marks to Nagpur in the ‘Door to Door Collection of Waste’ category, whereas this year, previously it got just 30%. Similarly, last year the same team gave 100% marks to Nagpur in ‘Source Segregation’ category, and this year it got only 1%.

“The previous year’s performance in both categories we performed well but this year we got very less marks which raised question over the marking. Keeping the last year’s performance in mind, we decided to challenge the marking and fortunately the marks increased,” told Rajesh Bhagat, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Solid Waste Management, NMC) to The Hitavada. “Nagpur’s score was already doubtful. 30% in ‘Door to Door Garbage Collection’ and 1% in ‘Source Segregation’ were surprising. After challenging the marks the parameters increased to 90% and 60% respectively which gave us 500 in GFC certification also. This type of marking raises question over the credibility of Swachh Survekshan,” said Kaustav Chatterjee, Ambassador of NMC for Swachh Bharat Mission.
