Major damage seen in AIIMS, Arera, Ashoka Garden and central Bhopal Notices sent to seven contractors, but no fines or punishment imposed

Over a dozen roads recently constructed by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) have deteriorated significantly, even before their warranty periods have ended. The widespread presence of deep potholes and general disrepair is causing immense hardship for citizens, particularly two-wheeler riders. Despite notices being issued to seven contractors in connection with the shoddy work, no fines or penalties have been levied to date, raising serious questions about quality control and accountability. Several key city arteries, including Data Colony Road, Ashoka Garden,

Gautam Nagar, Rachna Nagar and the stretch from Polytechnic Square to Roshanpura, which were either built or repaired prior to the 2023 Assembly elections, are now severely damaged. Similarly, asphalt work costing Rs 10 crore was undertaken in Sant Hirdaram Nagar between December 2022 and May 2024, yet these roads have also failed within one to three years. Recent monsoons have exacerbated the problem, creating large craters and significantly increasing the risk of accidents. BMC Superintending Engineer Subodh Jain confirmed that seven contractors have received notices for warranty violations. However, he also admitted that no penalties have been imposed yet.

Jain stated that further action would be taken if the contractors fail to complete repair work within the stipulated timeframe. The abysmal condition of the roads has impacted nearly all assembly constituencies in Bhopal. Major areas like Narela, Govindpura, Central, North, South-West, and Huzur are grappling with severely damaged thoroughfares. The stretch from Ashoka Garden Police Station to Sundar Nagar has been in disrepair for the past eight months, while even upscale localities such as AIIMS, Saket Nagar, the Bharat Talkies to Cantonment area, and Arera Colony are riddled with potholes.
