CITY’S talented shuttler Shourya Madavi has been seeded second in the girls Under-17 singles category for the Yonex-Sunrise GH Raisoni Memorial Maharashtra Sub-Junior State Selection Badminton Tournament which gets under way from Sunday at the newly-constructed Arundhati Arun Badminton Academy and Achievers Badminton Academy in Besa.
The tournament will be organised by Nagpur District Badminton Association (NDBA) under the aegis of Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA).
Shourya, a shuttler from Ace Badminton Academy, has given fourth seed in the Under-17girls doubles as well.
Various top badminton players in Under-15 and Under-17 categories from all over the State will be participating in the tournament.
The tournament will be inaugurated by Maharashtra Revenue Minister and Guardian Minister of Nagpur Chandrashekhar Bawankule along with MLA Pravin Datke on Sunday.
Sunil Raisoni, Chairman, Raisoni Education; Kundatai Vijaykar, President, NDBA; Dr Vipin Itankar, District Collector; Arun Lakhani, President, MBA; Mangesh Kashikar, Sr Vice-President, MBA and Secretary NDBA; Dr Mrunalini Naik, Project Director, Raisoni Sports and Cultural; Sujit Khare, Sales and Marketing, Max HealthCare will also remain present.
“The tournament will be held in singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories for both boys and girls in Under-15 and Under-17 age categories,” informed Mangesh Kashikar during a press conference.
“
Over 747 participants have registered for the State selection tournament which will conclude on August 14,” added Kashikar.
In order to strengthen the state’s technical expertise in the game, a state-level umpires examination and Maharashtra State umpires conclave commenced under the auspices of Maharashtra Badminton Association.
“Over 92 candidates have enrolled for the seminar in which 65 are novice and 27 are refreshers, which also boasts 32 participants from Vidarbha,” stated Kashikar.
The examination and conclave will consist of theory classes followed by practical training and examination. The seminar will be overseen by Badminton World Federation Technical officers who were part of Paris Olympics 2024 and various other prestigious badminton tournaments.
Shailesh Kulkarni and Sudip Barwe (BWF umpires), Vishwas Deswandikar (COC, Chairman, MBA), Anant Apte, Vinay Joshi (Observers), Madhavi Kashikar-Hedao, Gurdeep Singh Arora, Nikhil Rokade and Neha Goswai were prominently present on the dais during the presser.
