During Ganpati Visarjan at Badkas Chowk, Mahal, a female horse with a swollen leg was cruelly forced to stand and carry people on her back. The eight-year-old animal was rescued late at night by animal activist Surabhi Lalwani and, with support from PETA India, shifted to Kalote Animal Trust the next day for treatment and care.
The case underscores the plight of animals such as horses, camels, cows, buffaloes, and bulls, often exploited at marriages and religious events despite protections under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Lalwani stressed, “Everyone must understand that all animals feel the same hunger and pain as we do.” She has urged the Collector and city police to form a dedicated legal and enforcement team, involving lawyers, activists, and officials, to act swiftly against such cruelty and ensure strict implementation of animal welfare laws.
