To address growing concerns of citizens over stray dog menace as well as instances of cruelty against stray canines, Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh on Friday held an important meeting with representatives of Nagrik Upbhokta Margadarshak Manch (NUMM) and various animal welfare organisations.

During the meeting, the Mayor informed that ward-level committees will be formed to resolve issues related to stray dogs and to ensure their humane treatment. These committees will function under the supervision of a central 21-member committee. He further informed that the meeting was conducted in the backdrop of the country’s legal framework and directives of the Supreme Court.

He said suggestions from NGOs will also be invited to find long-term solutions. The Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation is authorised to sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs. As per rules, once sterilised and vaccinated, dogs must be released back into the same locality from where they were picked up. Senior office-bearer of NUMM, Dr P G Najpandey said that under the Mayor’s leadership, with the support of NGOs and veterinary doctors, effective measures will be taken both to protect citizens and to prevent cruelty against animals.

He added that Jabalpur will emerge as a model city in this regard, inspiring others across the country. The meeting was also attended by Mayor-in-Council members, senior officials and a large number of representatives from voluntary organisations.
