The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Nagpur, detained two men from Kamptee — a 42-year-old school teacher and a 40-year-old businessman — on Saturday after finding their names linked to an international WhatsApp group in which many users are from Pakistan.
According to officials, the
ATS had been keeping a close watch on their activities for the past two days after receiving information that some residents of the city were in touch with
people in Pakistan through social
media. Using surveillance data, the ATS identified the two suspects and raided their homes in Kamptee around 9 am. Both men were taken to the ATS office for questioning.
During interrogation, investigators confirmed that the two were part of the
WhatsApp group, but there was no evidence of their active participation. Officials believe they may have joined the group accidentally, possibly through a shared link.
Their mobile phones were seized, and all data was copied for further technical analysis.
The questioning continued for about nine hours. However, by evening, both men were released as no incriminating evidence was found against them. An ATS official said, the step was precautionary, as agencies are on high alert after recent security operations and are thoroughly verifying all suspicious links.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ATS) Santosh Wairagade confirmed the detention and assured that the investigation is still ongoing. Wairagade added that the ATS will continue to monitor social media activities to ensure that no one from the region is misused for unlawful purposes.
