Staff Reporter :

Nagpur witnessed intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning around 2 pm on Monday. The city witnessed the day’s highest 28.6 mm rainfall till 11.30 pm in Vidarbha. Since morning, dark clouds covered the city skies hinting at hevy downpour during the day. Getting uncomfortable due to increasing humidity around noon, the citizens were blessed by the rain god in the afternoon. Soon, the respite from humidity turned into a nightmare for many, especially those outdoors. For, the intense rainfall caused water-logging in not only low-lying areas but also many roads across the city. This resulted in traffic-jams and mess on most of the roads and temporary disrupted normal life. The rain, strong thunder and lightning, lasted till evening in several areas.

Due to heavy the downpour, the traffic movement slowed down on major routes and low lying areas, with commuters taking shelter under flyovers, bus stops, and shops. Waterlogging were reported at Contd from page 1 Loha Pul, Manish Nagar RUB, Narendra Nagar RUB, Somalwada RUB, Abhyankar Nagar, Shankar Nagar, Ganesh Tekdi Road, Automotive Square etc.

Due to waterlogging under RUBs, the roads were blocked by traffic department to avoid any incident. Power cut and uprooting of trees were also marked at some parts of the city. During evening hours, traffic jams were also reported at major junctions of the city as traffic cops were busy to maintain traffic movement at many parts. Weather experts have noted that such intense rain spells during September are a result of lingering monsoon activity, often marked by high moisture levels and local atmospheric instability. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious during thunder and lightning, especially avoiding open fields and tall structures.
