City Police get training in sign language for better communication with those impaired
Staff Reporter :
On the occasion of International Day of Sign Languages, September 23, 2025, Police organised a special training program to help police personnel communicate with speech and hearing-impaired victims.
The session was held under the chief guest Superintendent of Police, Sampat Upadhyay (IPS), and in the presence of Additional SP (Rural) Suryakant Sharma. The training was conducted by the organization ‘Saksham’, which taught police officials the basics of sign language, including hand gestures and expressions, to enable effective communication.
When speech and hearing-impaired victims come to police stations to file complaints, it often becomes difficult for the police to understand them. Keeping this in mind, the training aimed to establish smooth and effective dialogue between police personnel and such individuals, ensuring that their grievances are addressed promptly.
The program also saw the presence of Shiv Shankar Kapoor, Principal, Government Deaf School, Sanjay Soni, President, Mahakaushal Deaf Association, Pramod Nair, General Secretary, Mahakaushal Deaf Association, Akshay Soni from Saksham Organization, DSP (Rural) Akanksha Upadhyay, CSP Adhartal Rajeshwari Kaurav, CSP Ranjhi Satish Kumar Sahu, along with 25 police officers and staff members.
Speaking on the occasion, SP Sampat Upadhyay said, “The primary objective of the police is to deliver justice to every section of society, including those who face challenges in expressing themselves. By training our personnel in sign language, we are ensuring that complaints from the speech and hearing-impaired community can be understood easily and acted upon immediately.”
Trained police officers will now be available across police stations in the district. In case of practical difficulties in communication, these officers will assist in understanding the
complaints of speech and hearing-impaired victims and ensure timely legal action, helping them receive justice without delay.
