Expressing concern over India being in top countries having large number of Esophageal and Liver Cancer, internationally acclaimed Gastroenterologist Dr Kulwinder Dua said, “Apart from others, the major reason is the habit of smoking and drinking leading to rising cases of Esophageal, liver, colon cancer.” Dr Dua was in Nagpur in capacity of Chairman of ‘Outreach Committee of World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO)’. As Chairman, he covers Asia, Middle East, Africa and South America. Midas Hospital, run by Dr Shrikant Mukewar and Dr Saurabh Mukewar, has been recognised as International Training Centre by prestigious WEO and Dr Dua gave certificate and plaque to them. Dr Kulwinder Dua did his MBBS, MD from Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Later on, he went to USA.

Currently, he is working as Professor in the Department of Medicine and Paediatric (Gastroenterology) and Professor of Graduate School of Medical Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, USA. The team led by him in America made a new esophagus for a young man. The esophagus was made through donated skin tissue and metal stents. China, India and South Africa top in Esophageal cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer. According to Dr Dua, apart from habit of eating junk food, drinking and smoking are mainly responsible for these diseases. “The diseases can be prevented by two things--one is lifestyle changes and other is through time to time screening. For example, after one attains 45 years, one must undergo colonoscopy for every ten years.

This will make doctors understand whether the person is suffering from cancer or not. Similarly, if endoscopy is done in a judicious manner, the esophageal or stomach cancer can be identified and treated,” explained Dr Dua. Dr Dua was critical to parents, school, society because of whom, the children are failing to inculcate right lifestyle habits. Dr Dua expressed concern over rising childhood obesity. Dr Dua said, “WEO is spreading awareness about endoscopy. We want that the quality endoscopy should be accessible to all. We have Midas as the international training centre for endoscopy, now it will train the doctors who will impart training others. While recognising a centres we see that the institute is fulfilling all the stringent rules.
