Under ‘Operation Thunder’, Nagpur Police have carried out their biggest festive-season crackdown in September and seized 611 grams of Mephedrone (MD) and 3.155 kilograms of ganja, together valued at more than Rs 60 lakh. This action marks a sharp rise compared to earlier months and highlights how traffickers try to exploit the festive season. Police have responded with strict and coordinated enforcement to ensure the joy of Garba, Navratri and other festivals remains drug-free.

Between January and August 2025, Nagpur Police had seized 2.660 kilograms of MD worth Rs 1.67 crore and 334 kilograms of ganja. In comparison, September alone recorded a large quantity of narcotics seized which shows the increased scale of operations. So far, 11 accused have been arrested, while six more are absconding. Raids were carried out in areas including Kotwali, Kalamna, Wathoda, Yashodhara Nagar, Sitabuldi and Sakkardara. During the raids, the police directly targeted street-peddlers, hidden suppliers and financiers linked to the drug chain. Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal said, “Festivals symbolise purity, unity, and family bonding. Drugs destroy all three. We are determined to protect our youth from this silent poison.”

In addition to raids, police have intensified searches in slum clusters, pubs, hookah parlours and electronic markets to disrupt distribution hubs. Alongside enforcement, awareness campaigns with messages like “Celebrate Lights, Not Highs” are being run across colleges and on social media platforms, said CP Dr Singal. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Rahul Maknikar confirmed that further operations are planned through October to sustain the momentum. Social activists and community leaders have praised this dual approach of strict enforcement along with public awareness, calling it a model for urban policing.
