Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav will disburse a fee reimbursement amount of Rs 489 crore to over 20,000 private unaided schools across Madhya Pradesh under the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The reimbursement will be transferred directly to school accounts through a single-click electronic payment during a State-level programme scheduled to take place in Khirkia town of Harda district on September 29 (Monday).

According to Harsimran Preet Kaur, Additional Mission Director of the State Education Centre, the reimbursement is for the academic session 2023-24. The process has been carried out through a portal-based system, as per established procedures, with payments generated electronically based on school proposals submitted and verified through the official portal. This reimbursement will cover the school fees of approximately 8.45 lakh students enrolled under RTE in 20,652 unaided private schools in the State.

The RTE Act, 2009, mandates private unaided schools to reserve at least 25% of seats in entry-level classes for children from disadvantaged and economically weaker sections, offering them free education in schools located within their village, ward, or neighbourhood. Currently, nearly 8.5 lakh students are studying free of cost under this provision in Madhya Pradesh. Since the Act’s implementation in 2011-12, over 19 lakh students have benefitted from the scheme. The State Government has so far reimbursed nearly Rs 3,000 crore to private schools for providing free education under RTE.
