Investigating death case of a woman, Panagar police have registered a case of dowry killing and arrested her husband and mother-in-law. The arrested have been identified as husband Ankit Patel and mother-in-law Manju Patel, residents of Raipura village in Panagar. CSP Adhartal, Rajeshwari Kaurav informed that, on September 7, Sahil Kushwaha (23), a resident of Tiwari Kheda New Basti, informed police that his sister Mahima Kushwaha (25), who was married to Ankit Patel of village Raipura in May 2025, was admitted to Medical with her body warm but turning blue.
Her husband Ankit and relatives were present but gave no explanation. Later, her body was taken to her in-laws’ home in Raipura.
During investigation, the victim’s family alleged that at the time of marriage, Ankit Patel had initially refused the Rs 20,000 offered during rituals, demanding instead Rs 50,000. After persuasion, he accepted Rs 20,000. At the wedding, he also demanded a gold ring, for which Mahima’s father Rajesh Kushwaha gave another Rs 20,000. Post marriage, Ankit Patel and his mother Manju Patel allegedly harassed Mahima for a big refrigerator, cooler and a Royal Enfield motorcycle as dowry.
When these demands were not fulfilled, Mahima was harassed physically and mentally. On August 27, Mahima had confided to her father that she was unable to bear the daily taunts and beatings, urging him to somehow arrange the dowry items.
On September 6, unable to bear the harassment, Mahima allegedly consumed poison and died. On the basis of evidences, Panagar police registered a case against husband Ankit Patel and mother-in-law Manju Patel under Sections 85, 80(2), 3(5) of BNS and Sections 3 & 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Both accused are now in police custody and further investigation is underway.
