The Government of India had approved Rs 2,257.55 crore for the Phase-B development of IIT Bhilai on May 29, 2025. Out of this, Rs 1,092 crore has been earmarked for campus construction.
With this expansion, the built-up area of the institute will increase by an additional 1,51,343 square meters. Phase-B will pave the way for new engineering and science departments, state-of-the-art laboratories,
ICT-enabled lecture halls, advanced equipment, and prototyping facilities.
The development plan also includes hostels, a mess hall, an indoor sports complex, an open-air theatre, canteens, residential quarters, healthcare facilities, and expanded sports infrastructure such as cricket, football, and hockey grounds, along with tennis courts.
The student capacity will be doubled from 1,500 to 3,000.
One of the major highlights of Phase-B is the establishment of a Research Park at a cost of Rs 96 crore, the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh. The park will promote industry-academia collaboration and provide a strong ecosystem for advanced technology development. The entire Phase-B project is expected to be completed by October 2028. Earlier, in 2016, the Government of India had sanctioned Rs 1,090.17 crore for Phase-A development of IIT Bhilai.
Under this phase, the permanent campus was set up at Kutelabhata in Durg district with a built-up area of 1,34,450 square meters. The campus was designed to promote academic excellence, personal growth, and sustainable living with modern facilities such as smart building systems and a fully Wi-Fi-enabled environment. The Phase-A campus was formally dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister on February 20, 2024.
