‘Surpanakha Virupikaran’ episode draws crowd during Ramlila at Sadar

 

 

 

ongoing Dhanush Yagya Ramlila, on Saturday witnessed dramatic staging of “Surpanakha Virupikaran”. The episode, held at the Ramlila ground Sadar brought alive one of the pivotal moments from the Ramayana. As the act unfolded, Lord Ram was shown performing evening prayers at

 

Panchavati, while Surpanakha appeared wandering in the skies. Enchanted by Lord Ram’s charm, she proposed marriage to him. Lord Ram, bound by his vow of monogamy, declined her proposal.

 

Surpanakha then turned towards Lakshman, requesting his hand in marriage and threatening dire consequences if her wish was not fulfilled. Provoked by her arrogance and threats, Lakshman chide Surpanakha and in anger, disfigured her by cutting off her nose and ears. Wounded and humiliated, Surpanakha rushed to her brothers Khara and Dushan and narrated the entire incident. A fierce battle followed, in

 

which Khara and Dushan were slain. Grief-stricken and enraged, Surpanakha then set out for Lanka to inform her brother Ravana. With this, the evening’s performance concluded. The Ramlila will resume on Sunday with the much-awaited staging of Sita Haran. The organising committee members Madhur Tiwari, Sitaram Kurchania, Sharda Tiwari, Dhananjay Bajpai, Dr. Shankar Pandey and others have appealed to devotees and residents to attend in large numbers.
