The mobile phone snatching incident targeting Intelligence IG Dr Ashish in the high-security Char Imli area had raised serious concerns across the Police Department. However, Habibganj police have successfully cracked the high-profile case within just 50 hours, arresting three accused, including two minors.
The stolen Android phone, allegedly containing sensitive state security data, and the motorcycle used in the crime have both been recovered. According to police, the incident occurred on the night of September 23 when IG Dr Ashish was out for a walk with his wife in the secure Char Imli locality.
Three suspects, a juvenile ringleader, 18-year-old Aditya Kanjariya, and another minor, snatched two mobile phones (an iPhone and an Android) while riding a single motorcycle. Following the heist, the accused reportedly had an argument. In a panic, one of them threw away the
iPhone nearby, but the sensitive
Android phone was wrapped in a polythene bag and buried in a four-foot-deep pit inside Swarn Jayanti Park. The juvenile ringleader confessed during interrogation that the crime was planned as part of a scheme to ‘make quick money’.
The ringleader (minor) and Aditya Kanjariya were initially arrested on Friday, with the third minor being taken into custody on Saturday.
The stolen items was recovered based on their confessions.
Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra stated, “Teams from the Crime Branch and half a dozen police stations tracked the suspects by meticulously sifting through hundreds of CCTV footages and using surveillance. We are now investigating the gang’s involvement in other snatching incidents.
