In a significant step towards tackling the pressing challenge of Sickle Cell Disease among women, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, organised a large-scale awareness and screening camp under the Swasth Naari, Sashakta Parivar Abhiyaan. The initiative underscored the urgency of early diagnosis and proactive care for expectant mothers affected by the hereditary disorder. The camp, held at Kota Colony, drew participation from nearly 125 individuals, including pregnant women, mothers, and community health workers. The program was jointly conducted by the Sickle Cell Committee and the Department of Biochemistry at AIIMS Raipur in collaboration with the Association of Biochemistry Clinical Welfare.

The event was led by Professor Dr Eli Mohapatra, Chairperson of the Sickle Cell Committee, alongside committee members Dr Suprava Patel, Dr Tushar Jagzape, Dr Nilaj Bagde, Dr Ashish Gupta, and Dr Amit Mishra. The experts highlighted the vital role of routine screening and timely medical intervention in safeguarding maternal and child health during pregnancies complicated by Sickle Cell Disease. During the camp, 47 blood samples were collected for Sickle Cell screening, haemoglobin analysis, and glucose testing. Participants also received one-on-one counselling on disease management, preventive measures, and lifestyle adjustments essential for healthier outcomes. The initiative reinforced the importance of regular health checks during pregnancy as well as premarital screening to reduce the long-term impact of Sickle Cell Disease in vulnerable populations. With this community outreach effort, AIIMS Raipur reaffirmed its commitment to advancing public health and ensuring holistic care for women and families grappling with genetic and lifestyle-related health challenges.
