115 objections filed with NMC on Prabhag system

Staff Reporter  :

By September 15, the civic body has to take decision on objections, with the process to be overseen by a Principal Secretary-level officer

The objections to the draft of the Prabhag boundaries published by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) crossed the 100 mark on the last day of the submission. A perusal of the objections on part of civic body officials is still under way but as per information, most of them are minor in nature. Only a few objections relate to Prabhag boundary in its entirety, while the maximum objections relate to minor issues, like the omission of locality names or about shifting of particular booths and so on. Some of the objections also relate to clerical errors, and the same would be looked into minutely by the corporation official. In case they are valid, then corrections would be carried out to ensure there is no room for any error during the course of elections. As per the programme finalised by State Election Commission, the objections to Prabhag formation was to be submitted by 3 pm of September 4.

Till Wednesday about 82 objections were received by the NMC, and on Thursday the number reached 98 while data from Zonal offices received put the same at 115. Maximum 68 objections were submitted at NMC Headquarters, and 9 each at the Satranjipura, Nehru Nagar and Lakadganj Zone offices. The next step in the election programme is to study the objections individually and categorise them in case there is a common element in them. Thereafter Government has tasked a Principal Secretary rank official for each of the Municipal Corporations to preside over the process of hearing the objections and take the decision on its acceptance or rejection. For NMC, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), has been nominated to decide on the objections to Prabhag system. The time table set by the State Government has given a deadline of September 15 for completing the process of deciding on objections and submit the report to SEC.

Thereafter the next step involves holding draw for reserving the seats for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes, OBC and for women. This is going to the most keenly watched step as the same can make or mar the chances of aspirants in case the draw is not favourable.
