THE India Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 151st foundation day on Thursday with a special exhibition at the local weather department office in Anand Nagar. The programme aimed at spreading awareness about weather science and familiarising students and the general public with the process of weather calculation and forecasting. On the occasion, meteorologists interacted with visitors and explained in simple terms how weather data is collected and analysed. Incharge of the Meteorological Observatory, Devendra Kumar Tiwari said a series of activities were organised to mark the department’s 151 years of service.

The office premises were cleaned and decorated and department officials, staff members and their families participated in the celebrations. An exhibition was conducted displaying various instruments used in meteorological observations. Experts demonstrated how weather related data such as temperature, air pressure, wind direction and humidity is recorded using specialised equipment. Visitors were also given information about radio sound systems, radio waves and temperature requirements for aircraft operations.

A live demonstration was conducted by releasing an air balloon fitted with instruments to measure atmospheric pressure and upper-air conditions. Meteorologists also explained key weather phenomena including western disturbances, cyclones, low-pressure systems, unseasonal rainfall and formation of the southwest monsoon. The process of preparing weather forecasts was explained in detail, drawing keen interest from students.

Agricultural meteorologist Manish Bhan, former in-charge officer A K Verma, meteorologists B J Jacob, Anita Singh, Principal of Sandipani School Adhartal Anju Tamrakar along with other departmental officers and a large number of students and citizens were present on the occasion.
