As thousands of cricket fans are expected to pour into the city for the India vs New Zealand T20 International match at VCA’s Jamtha Stadium on January 21, Nagpur Police are turning to cutting-edge technology to ensure safety and smooth crowd movement. For the high-profile match, the city police will deploy ‘AI Nirikshak’, India’s first AI-driven crowd management and intelligence platform. The tool has been developed under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal. The platform was launched as part of a strategic public safety initiative during the Maharashtra Winter Assembly Session held in Nagpur and has since been positioned as a key tool for managing large public events. Cricket matches are known to generate massive crowds, not only inside the stadium but also across nearby roads, parking areas, public transport routes and surrounding localities. Keeping this in mind, Nagpur Police will use AI Nirikshak to maintain real-time situational awareness before, during, and after the match.

Identification of high-pressure zones using heat maps

The AI-powered system will monitor crowd density and congestion through live video feeds, helping police identify high-pressure zones using heat maps. It can detect sudden crowd surges, abnormal behaviour, and suspicious activities, and instantly send alerts to the Command and Control Centre. The platform will also assist in watchlist-based monitoring at key entry and exit points, strengthening overall security. In addition to crowd control, ‘AI Nirikshak’ will play an important role in traffic and mobility management. Real-time insights into vehicle movement, pedestrian flow, and parking congestion will allow police to dynamically manage traffic, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure smoother movement for spectators, local residents, and emergency services across the city.

Early alerts about unusual activity

Officials said the system will help police anticipate potential problems rather than merely reacting to them. Early alerts about overcrowding or unusual activity will allow timely preventive action, ensuring that minor issues do not escalate into major incidents. On the ground, officers will benefit from faster, data-driven decision-making during the high-energy event. For spectators, the use of ‘AI Nirikshak’ is expected to translate into a safer and more comfortable match-day experience. With better monitoring of entry and exit points and crowd circulation within and around the stadium, authorities aim to ensure smooth access and dispersal of fans. Describing the platform as a “digital force multiplier,” a senior police officials said ‘AI Nirikshak’ gives the department “eyes on everything” across critical zones. CP Dr Singal said that ensuring citizen safety during large gatherings remains the top priority of the police force. “AI Nirikshak has improved our ability to understand crowd dynamics and respond proactively, ” he said. Built on Microsoft Azure and powered by advanced artificial intelligence, computer vision, geospatial intelligence, and predictive analytics, ‘AI Nirikshak’ is a Made-in-India solution aligned with data security and Government policy frameworks.
