National Green Tribunal :

(NGT) has directed the State Government and Municipalities to take comprehensive steps to address plastic pollution and microplastics. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for March 27. The matter pertains to a suo motu hearing. The NGT has directed that state and district-level committees monitor plastic waste and microplastic pollution and submit action reports to the Environment Secretary within four weeks.

The state government has directed collectors, the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and regional officers to fulfill their responsibilities. The Municipal Corporations of Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Rewa, and Ujjain should demonstrate appropriate seriousness in this regard. The NGT has taken seriously the threat posed by plastic and microplastics to health and the environment. The NGT found that in Bhopal alone, more than 50 illegal plastic recycling units pose a serious risk to approximately two lakh citizens.

Therefore, technologies for microplastic removal must be evaluated. Testing and evaluation of existing technologies is also essential. New technologies must be developed to remove microplastics from air, water, and soil. Sustainable design of tex and cosmetic products. Efforts should be accelerated to reduce environmental emissions through improved plastic and solid waste management. Promoting biodegradable plastics and recycling is also a solution. Attention is needed to clean rivers, wetlands, and beaches. Filter screens should be installed in sewage and stormwater systems. Microplastics should also be monitored twice a year in municipal water supplies and wetlands.
