Nagpur ITI to be modernised under PM Setu scheme

The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a plan to modernise Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the PM SETU scheme to improve skills and generate employment opportunities. The scheme will be rolled out in ITIs located in three districts and Nagpur’s is included in the first phase, and will be expanded to other districts in the next phase. The programme aims to upgrade training infrastructure and make job placements easier for candidates. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took this initiative while Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha had been working on it since long. The aim is to reduce the gap between the demand and supply of skilled manpower. The project will follow a hub-and-spoke model and will be implemented in phases from next year, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office.

The Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme, launched on October 4, 2025, is aimed at modernising 1,000 government ITIs. The funding ratio is 50:33:17 per cent, with contributions from the Centre, the Maharashtra Government, and industry, respectively. It means a whopping 55 per cent will be the share of Central Government, 33 of Maharashtra Government and 17 per cent contributions will be from industries. Each cluster (one hub ITI and four spoke ITIs) will cost about Rs 241 crore over five years. Of this, the Central Government will contribute Rs 112 crore, the State Government Rs 98 crore, and the industry sector Rs 31 crore. Approval was also given for the State Government’s expenditure of Rs 98 crore over five years.

The Government ITI in Nagpur will be modernised as a hub. This includes the Girls’ ITI, Nagpur, and ITIs in Kamptee, Hingna, and Butibori. In a hub ITI, an average of four new courses will be started, and ten existing courses will be upgraded. In a spoke ITI, two new courses will be started, and eight courses will be upgraded. In areas with fewer industries, service sector, multi-skill courses, and livelihood courses will be introduced.
