A double-edged crisis of damaged roads and garbage dumping has affected residents

While we strive for a Smart City image, the reality on the ground at Shree Gruhlaxmi Ambabai Square tells a story of administrative apathy and civic decline. Residents of Manav Seva Nagar, Seminary Hills, are currently grappling with a double-edged crisis: crumbling road infrastructure and an escalating garbage dumping problem that is directly impacting the health and dignity of local students. Some arterial roads connecting the square have deteriorated into a series of deep craters. This creates a treacherous environment for commuters, especially two-wheeler riders who often fail to gauge the depth of these submerged holes.

Beyond the physical danger, the stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of vector-borne diseases in a densely populated residential zone. The most alarming development is at the entrance of Shree Gruhlaxmi Ambabai Square, which has been unofficially designated by passers-by and irresponsible citizens as a garbage dumping spot. Shockingly, the waste is being piled up directly against the boundary wall of the New Girls Hostel (Babu Jagjivan Ram).

This stretch, which should ideally be a safe and clean transit for female students, is now characterised by a foul stench and piles of decomposing organic waste inviting diseases. The proximity of the dump to a residential educational facility is a major health violation. Students residing in the hostel are forced to keep their windows shut to avoid the flies and mosquitoes. Yet, the risk of skin infections and respiratory issues remains high due to the unhygienic surroundings. The local community has expressed its outrage over the deteriorating condition, citing a complete lack of oversight by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). “It is heartbreaking to see our students living in such conditions. We pay our taxes, yet we have to navigate roads that look like battlefields and walk past mountains of trash just to reach our homes. The wall of a girls hostel should be a place of safety, not a dumping ground for the city’s filth.” Sunita Deshmukh, a resident of Manav Seva Nagar said.

“Every time I ride to Ambabai Square, I have to choose a long course because the one which saves time damages the vehicles as it is filled with potholes. Few days ago, authorities have asphalted roads in Manav Seva Nagar but still there are some roads which are full of potholes. Coupled with the garbage pile-up, it’s a total failure of civic management,” said Shridutt Ganjiwale, another resident. Despite repeated complaints to the local ward office, no permanent cleaning schedule or road repair initiative has been observed. The residents are now demanding the immediate installation of ‘No Dumping’ signs and regular garbage collection from hostel periphery.
