IIT Bhilai Phase-A Project awarded prestigious 5-Star GRIHA LD Rating

 

 

 

Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai has achieved a significant milestone with its Phase-A Campus Development Project being awarded the 5-Star GRIHA LD (Large Developments) rating, the highest level of certification under the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) framework. The rating has been conferred by the GRIHA Council in association with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. The award was formally presented to IIT Bhilai at the 9th GRIHA Regional Conclave held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday at Raipur.

 

Prof Rajiv Prakash, the Director, IIT Bhilai, received the award from the Guest of Honour, Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education, Government of Chhattisgarh. GRIHA is India’s national rating system for green buildings and habitats, developed to promote environmentally sustainable design, construction, and operational practices. While GRIHA and focus on individual buildings, GRIHA LD evaluates the environmental performance of large-scale developments such as campuses, townships, and neighbor hoods. Projects with a site area of 50 hectares or more are eligible under this category. The objective of GRIHA LD is to provide a comprehensive framework to assess sustainability at the planning and infrastructure level.

 

Projects are evaluated across parameters such as site planning, energy efficiency, water and wastewater management, solid waste management, transport systems, and social infrastructure. The Phase-A project of IIT Bhilai was completed in early 2024, and the permanent campus was dedicated to the nation on 20 February 2024 by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The Phase-A campus, which forms the core academic and residential infrastructure of the institute, has demonstrated exemplary performance in sustainable planning and resource efficiency. The 5-Star rating reflects IIT Bhilai’s strong commitment to environmentally responsible development and creation of a green, future-ready campus. This recognition reinforces the institute’s continued efforts toward sustainability and alignment with national goals for resilient and energy-efficient infrastructure.
