A former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and his wife were killed after their scooter was hit by an SUV on the Saoner-Pandhurna Highway near Salai turning under the jurisdiction of Kelwad Police Station, at 10 am on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Domasav Chama Dhunde (65) and his wife Pramila Domasav Dhunde (49), both residents of Parsodi (Vakil) in Kalmeshwar tehsil. According to police, the couple was travelling towards Saoner on an Activa (MH-40/DF-3287). At the same time, an SUV Fortuner (MH-31/FR-956) was heading from Nagpur towards Pandhurna. The SUV hit the two-wheeler near Salai turning, leaving both the riders seriously injured. After receiving information about the unfortunate incident, Kelwad Police Station In-charge Ashish Singh Thakur and Highway Police Assistant Police Inspector Shrikant Koli rushed to the spot.
 
With the help of an ambulance, the injured couple was shifted to the Government Hospital in Saoner for treatment. However, doctors declared both of them dead. Domasav Dhunde had served at Kelwad Police Station during his career. After retiring from the force, he had settled in his native village with his family. The incident has left the local community in shock, as the couple died while travelling on the highway. Police have arrested the ‘Fortuner’ driver, identified as Jitendra Meena (23), a resident of Nagpur. A case has been registered against him, and further investigation is underway.
