MOUNTAINEER and solo cyclist Sameera Khan is travelling across India to inspire girls to embrace courage, independence and ambition, with a special focus on those from rural backgrounds. For Sameera Khan, a mountain is more than a formidable challenge, and a road is more than a stretch of distance to be covered. Both represent opportunities to conquer fear, discover inner strength and push beyond limitations. A mountaineer, entrepreneur and passionate solo cyclist born in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, Sameera has dedicated her journey to inspiring girls across India to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. Having scaled one of India’s highest and toughest peaks, Sameera has travelled to more than 40 countries, including undertaking solo cycling expeditions across 37 nations. Her latest cycling journey, which began on August 5 and concluded on October 5, took her across Chhattisgarh, spreading a message of courage, selfreliance and gender equality. Her broader Mission Mount Everest, Rural Girls’ Empowerment campaign has seen her cycle more than 9,000 kilometres across 10 States, visiting over 2,000 schools and interacting with girl students. Covering around 50 to 70 kilometres daily, she has turned her cycling expedition into a mission to encourage young girls to dream beyond social and economic barriers. During her Chhattisgarh journey, she travelled through districts including Durg, B i l a s p u r , B e m e t a r a , Rajnandgaon, Mahasamund, BalodabazarBhatapara, Balod, Dhamtari, JanjgirChampa, Jashpur, Korba, Surguja, Kanker, Kondagaon, Bastar and Sukma. Sameera chose cycling because its slower pace allows her to connect with her surroundings, reflect on her consciousness and experience life more closely. It is also an environmentally friendly mode of travel. The physical endurance and mental determination required to cycle long distances, she believes, mirror the resilience girls need to overcome challenges in their lives.

Through interactions with students from Classes VII to XII in Government and private schools, she seeks to raise awareness about gender discrimination, dowry, harassment and restrictive social practices. Her message is particularly directed at rural girls, who may have limited exposure to opportunities, alternative career paths and women role models. For Sameera, empowerment begins with helping girls recognise their worth and understand that their circumstances need not determine their future. She wants them to develop the confidence to make independent choices and the determination to pursue their ambitions. The response from students has been encouraging. Sameera says girls she met during her journey continue to write to her, expressing gratitude for the new ideas and knowledge they gained through their interactions. These messages reinforce her belief that even a brief conversation can broaden a young person’s outlook and inspire lasting change. She also emphasises solidarity among women, urging girls to support one another, build meaningful connections and celebrate each other’s achievements. Coming from a humble financial background, Sameera has pursued her ambitions through determination and personal resources. She has expressed gratitude to police departments and bureaucrats who provided security assistance, hospitality and support in coordinating motivational programmes at schools during her travels. Her vision extends beyond cycling. She hopes to establish indoor rock-climbing centres called ‘Vijaiye Bhava’ in different States, including Chhattisgarh, to introduce girls, particularly those from rural areas, to adventure sports. She believes climbing can teach confidence, patience, problem-solving and the courage to confront fear. Among the women who inspire her are Sushmita Sen, Indira Gandhi, Dia Mirza, Benazir Bhutto and Margaret Thatcher, whose lives and achievements have influenced her outlook. For Sameera, the true achievement of her journey lies not merely in the kilometres covered or mountains conquered, but in the confidence she helps nurture among young girls. With every school visit and every conversation, she hopes to show them that their dreams deserve space and their ambitions deserve pursuit.
