Traffic police doubled midnight crackdown, 25 nakabandi points to check drunk driving
Staff Reporter :
The Nagpur Traffic Police will launch a major night crackdown from Monday to curb drunk driving and other violations of traffic safety rules.
The drive will cover 25 nakabandi points across the city. Traffic police teams will check vehicles for drunk driving, helmet violations, triple-seat riding and valid documents. Earlier, nakabandi was conducted at only 12 points during the night. The main focus was on drunk
driving.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar told ‘The Hitavada’ that the enforcement has been intensified in view of the rising concern over road accidents. He said many motorists ignore basic safety rules during the night.
Helmet use is also found to be low during the evening and night hours. In accidents, riders without helmets often suffer serious head injuries. In some cases, such injuries prove fatal. The new system will also bring all checks under a single coordinated operation.
Earlier, nakabandi was conducted in two shifts. Police teams checked vehicles at 12 points from 7 pm to 10 pm. Another set of checks was conducted from 11 pm to 2 am at 12 points. Now, the checking will be conducted at 25 locations in a single shift from 10 pm to 2 am.
The traffic police will not restrict the drive to drunk driving. Teams will check for multiple violations during the same operation, DCP Mirkhelkar said. Helmet violations, triple-seat riding, drunk driving and vehicle documents will be checked. Action will also be taken against vehicles found violating safety norms.
The department is also focusing on rash driving and other behaviour that increases the risk of accidents during evening and night hours. Officials said the objective is not only to detect violations but also to improve compliance with road safety rules.
Checkpoints to change
The Traffic Police will change the 25 nakabandi points every day. The move is aimed at
keeping drunk drivers guessing and preventing them from identifying fixed checking
locations. Officials hope the surprise checks will make impact and curb violation.
