The investigation into extortion threats issued to eight bullion traders in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has revealed that the threatening letters were posted from a post box in Khamla area. The police have now started investigating the area to identify the persons who posted the letters.
According to a police official, the letters were posted on October 20, 21 and 22 from a post box in Khamla. They were then sent to the Trimurti Nagar post office before reaching their destinations in Itwari. The police traced the route of the letters while checking their backward links.
The investigators are now trying to establish who used the Khamla post box to send the letters. They are also examining the movement of the letters through the postal network to identify those involved in the extortion attempt.
Eight letters had reached bullion traders in the Itwari area, creating panic among the business community. Following complaints from the traders, the Tehsil police registered an offence against unidentified persons on Monday. The police said identifying the senders was crucial to cracking the case.
Eight jewellers in the Gandhibagh area received extortion threats in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from each trader and threatened to kill them and their family
members if the money was not paid within three days. Nehal Tinkhede (31), proprietor of Durga Jewellers on New Itwari Road, lodged a complaint. He told the police that a woman visited his shop on October 31 between 3 pm and 3.30 pm. She asked him for Rs 10 to buy a postage stamp and handed him an envelope before leaving.
When Tinkhede opened it, he found seven more envelopes addressed to other jewellers in Gandhibagh. A threatening note inside claimed to be from shooters of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Mumbai. The note demanded Rs 10 lakh from each jeweller. It threatened to slit their throats if they failed to pay within three days. It also warned them against approaching the police and asked them to display a 'Jai Shri Ram' poster after making the payment.
The Tehsil police registered a case under Sections 308(4), 351(3), 351(4) and 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against unidentified persons.
