The Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested Varun Valmiki in Agra on Monday evening, more than a month after the murder of retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal, 70, in Bhopal. Police brought him to the city early Tuesday. During the journey, near Mugalia Chhap, he allegedly tried to snatch a policeman’s pistol and escape. Police fired, injuring him in the leg. He was admitted to Hamidia Hospital. Caretaker suspected of murder: Agrawal was found murdered at his Suraj Nagar residence in Ratibad. Police believe the crime took place at 11 pm between September 29 and 4.40 am on September 30. CCTV footage allegedly showed Valmiki leaving the house around 2.30 am and boarding the Kerala Express at Bhopal railway station at 4.12 am.

Police suspect dispute over reprimand: Investigators suspect Valmiki attacked Agrawal after being reprimanded. He allegedly slit the officer’s throat with a shaving blade and fled with $13,000, jewellery and a mobile phone. Police said the stolen dollars were later exchanged in Gwalior. Nine-state search, 2,500 CCTV cameras: More than 10 police teams searched across nine states, examined over 2,500 CCTV cameras and questioned more than 100 people. A reward of Rs 50,000 had been announced for information leading to the arrest. Disguise helped police track accused: ACP (Crime) Shailendra Singh Chauhan said a team spent four days conducting an undercover operation in Agra. Officers changed their appearance and eventually spotted

Investigators are verifying claims that he stole phones in several cities while on the run and demanded money for their return. Agency link under investigation: Valmiki had been employed through Verma Home Healthcare and Housekeeping Agency.
