Nagpur Metro has submitted a funding request of Rs 1,335 crore for the current financial year to accelerate construction of its Phase-2 project, officials said. The request comes under a new centralised funding system under which the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs allocates funds to MahaMetro, which then distributes them to individual metro projects. “This funding is crucial to maintain the pace of construction,” said MahaMetro official. “Phase-2 is moving from pier foundations to superstructure work. Without timely funds, progress on spans, stations and corridors could slow down.”

Currently, span erection across all Phase-2 corridors is at 14 per cent, with variations like 4 per cent completion on the Khapri-Butibori stretch and 31 per cent on the Automotive-Kanhan corridor. Of the 32 planned stations, work on 28 has already begun. The Rs 1,335 crore will support precast segment production, launcher operations and specialised construction equipment. The centralised allocation model brings both opportunities and uncertainties. “If Nagpur Metro efficiently utilises the funds and meets deadlines, it may strengthen future funding cases,” the official added. Phase-2’s total estimated cost is Rs 6,708 crore, funded through a combination of central and state contributions, institutional borrowing, and international loans.
