IT WAS a mixed day for Mumbai teams in the Handball Pro League (HPL) underway at the indoor hall of Divisional Sports Complex, Mankapur on Wednesday.
While Mumbai eves — Mumbai Esha’s Marvels recorded their second win in as many days by drubbing Ahmedabad Angels 31-21, the men’s team — Mumbai Mercenaries lost to Bhilai Battalion 34-43.
In opening match of Day Two, Mumbai Marvels skipper Priyanka Thakur led from the front scoring ten goals. She was assisted by Mamta Mitharwal and Gulshal Sharma who scored six and five goals each respectively. For Angels, captain Anumit and Gaurav fired six each while Ritu netted three goals.
The winners led 15-11 at the half-time. Priyanka was named Player of the Match.
Mumbai Mercenaries and Bhilai Battalion men started aggressively and were locked 15 all at the break. In a high-scoring second half, Bhilai upped the ante to add as many as 28 goals while Mumbai scored 19.
Bhilai’s Arjun scored a match high of 12 goals, Mahesh and Vikrant contributed seven each while Vishal scored six. For the losing team, Vipul scored ten while Ravi nine.
Wardha Momentum Warriors gave a good fight to Bhopal Blasters but eventually went down 27-29. Bhopal led 12-10 at the lemon break. Man of the match Joginder scored nine goals for the winning team while Wardha’s Satyaveer Singh and Mohammed Amir contributed seven each.
In final match of the day, Lucknow Lioness pipped Chandrapur Think Tank 28-25 in an exciting encounter.
Lucknow were 16-13 ahead at the half-time. For the winners, Bhavna (10) scored in the double digits and Chandrapur’s Nikki scored nine goals.
Nagpur’s both men’s and women’s teams will be seen in action on Thursday. Nagpur Tigers will take on Bhopal Blasters and Nagpur Ajit Nectars will play Lucknow Lioness.
Inaugural edition of HPL is being held under the aegis of Handball Association of India.
