Kopra Reservoir has become a haven for rare and beautiful birds. The natural surroundings are teeming with waterfowl and grassland species. The reservoir is fast emerging as a special destination for environmentalists, birdwatchers, and wildlife photographers. Its tranquil atmosphere, clean water and lush greenery have made the area a safe haven for numerous local and migratory birds.
The rich biodiversity here demonstrates that when natural resources are conserved, nature restores its own beauty. So far, several migratory birds such as the Intermediate Egret (Ardea intermedia), Ruddy Shelduck and Tricolored Munia, along with many other local species, have been spotted here, indicating that the reservoir has become a preferred habitat for birds.
“The Intermediate Egret (Ardea intermedia) is a strikingly calm and elegant water bird. Its bright white plumage, long black legs, and yellow pointed beak distinguish it from other species.
The bird can stand motionless for hours in shallow water, waiting patiently for prey. As soon as it spots movement, it seizes its prey with lightning speed. It is usually seen alone or in small groups around ponds, marshes and riverbanks.
Kopra Reservoir has now become one of its primary habitats,” informed bird enthusiast Satyaprakash Pandey.
Speaking about the Ruddy Shelduck, Pandey said its orange-brown plumage, light-coloured face and powerful flight make it one of the most attractive birds at the reservoir. A distinctive feature of this species is that it forms lifelong pairs and fiercely defends its territory. Its loud, trumpet-like call can be heard from a considerable distance. The bird is equally comfortable foraging in open
fields and swimming in water. Its activities, especially during the morning and evening hours, enliven the lake shores.
“The Tricoloured Munia, with its small body and striking tri-coloured plumage, draws everyone’s attention. It is a highly social bird, often seen in flocks and flying in coordinated groups. Grass seeds are its favourite food, and it is a delight to watch it foraging in fields and meadows. It is also a skilled nest builder, constructing secure, spherical nests from grass blades. Its melodious chirping enlivens the entire environment,” Pandey added.
Kopra Reservoir is not merely a water source but a living example of the harmonious coexistence of nature and humans. The increasing number of birds here indicates that if water bodies, forests, and land are protected, wildlife will return to safe havens. The reservoir sends a strong message of environmental conservation to future generations and is emerging as an inspiration for nature lovers.
