MP Assembly Budget session begins today, Finance Minister Devda to present paperless budget on Feb 18

The 19-day Madhya Pradesh Assembly Budget session is set to begin on Monday. Finance Minister Jagdish Devda will present the budget 2026-27 in digital format on February 18, while the Opposition is preparing to corner the Government on several issues. The Mohan Yadav Government has already indicated plans to increase the budget size. It is estimated that the total budget this time could be around Rs 4.85 lakh crore, an increase from last year’s
Rs 4.21 lakh crore.
The Opposition is preparing to corner the Government on several issues. The water contamination incident that took lives of several in Bhagirathpura area of Indore, rising debt and law and order issues could be key issues. Meanwhile, the Government is also preparing to respond to the Opposition. With 2026 being declared the agricultural year, there is likely to be a special focus on agriculture and rural development.
Additionally, additional provisions may be made for infrastructure in view of Simhastha Mahaparva in 2028. The Government aims to increase the budget to over Rs 7 lakh crore by 2028.
Seven bills including three related to the Labour Department, two related to the Law Department and two related to the Finance Department.
A bill related to salaries and allowances of MLAs may also be introduced in the Assembly.
In Assembly preparations for the session have been completed. This time, heated debates are already expected within the House. The session will begin with the Governor’s address. The budget session will continue until March 6. A total of 12 sittings will be held during this period. On February 18, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Jagdish Devda will present the budget for financial year 2026-27. This year’s budget will be presented entirely in digital format. Tablets and electronic documents will be used instead of traditional bulky budget books. Out of 3,478 questions, Legislative Assembly Secretariat received 2,253 questions online for this session.
Opposition party’s MLAs meet:
Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar has called a
meeting of the Congress Legislatures on Sunday to chalk out a strategy and outline for the session.
Leader of Opposition Singhar stated that the legislative party meeting will discuss a roadmap to strongly raise public interest issues including the failed policies and scams of the BJP Government, increasing amount of debt on the State Government, deaths due to contaminated water in Indore, the issue of farmers’ support prices and hailstorms, unemployment, increasing atrocities against tribals and Dalits and deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
The Leader of the Opposition stated that he has also sought suggestions from the general public through social media platforms, so that problems of the people of the State can be raised in the Assembly.
Ruling party leaders have appealed to all members to raise issues concerning the public in the Assembly and through constructive debate, cooperate with the Government to accelerate the State’s development.
