IN THE wake of massive Mephedrone (MD) drug seizures by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Amravati, Satara andWardha districts in last two months, Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Sadanand Date on Sunday directed Nagpur Police to intensify “quality action” against the growing drug menace. He stressed that police intelligence must remain active and alert so that major drug smugglers and key players involved in the illegal trade are identified and sent behind bars. DGP Date was speaking during a review meeting of the Nagpur Police Commissionerate held on Sunday. During the meeting, he took a detailed review of the action taken by Nagpur Police against drug-related crimes and asked officials to focus not just on the number of cases, but on effective investigations that lead to the arrest of big offenders. Drug consumption has shown an alarming rise across Maharashtra. It may be mentioned here that while state police have registered several cases with seizures ranging from a few grams to kilograms, however, the DRI has made three major MD seizures in recent months. These include the seizure of 128 kg of MD from Karanja (Ghadge) in Wardha district on December 9, 2025, 22 kg of MD from Satara on January 24, 2026, and 5 kg of MD from Amravati city on February 1, 2025. A retired police official claimed that such cases clearly indicate the scale of the problem and the need for coordinated and intelligence-based policing in the State.

Act fast on the complaints

THE DGP instructed Nagpur Police to ensure that complaints from citizens are taken seriously and acted upon without delay. He emphasized that FIRs should be registered promptly on every genuine complaint, so that public confidence in the police system is strengthened and criminals do not get an opportunity to escape due to delays.
