The Department of Surgery at Neta ji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB) Medical College, Jabalpur, has achieved a significant milestone on the national stage. The team was honoured with the Best Presentation Award at BESTECH-2026, India’s inaugural Surgical Innovation Summit, held at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow. The Jabalpur team secured this prestigious accolade while competing against premier national institutions, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences

(AIIMS) and Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI). Resident Dr Daphnie Johns successfully presented the award-winning research focuses on Low-Cost Targeted Axillary Dissection (TAD), an advanced technique in breast cancer surgery. The innovation, colloquially termed the “Jabalpur Model,” prioritizes making high-end medical procedures accessible to the general public.

It may be mentioned that the Targeted Axillary Dissection technique is currently practiced at only a select few elite cancer centers across India. With this recognition, the Surgery Department at NSCB Medical College establishes itself as a pioneer in adopting and developing this advanced protocol. The technique utilizes affordable clips and dyes as substitutes for expensive imported equipment and allows for targeted treatment, reducing the necessity for more invasive procedures. It brings world-class surgical standards to patients from lower-income backgrounds who otherwise might not afford such specialized care.

Dr Sanjay Yadav, noted Breast Cancer Surgeon and Dr Deepti Sharma, HoD, Surgery, were invited as faculty. Dr Yadav also delivered lecture on Advanced Ultrasonography in Breast Cancer Surgery and moderated surgical shark tank session, which was first in India. This demonstrated clinical expertise and innovative thinking and served as a point of pride for the entire Mahakaushal region.
