Around 20 students of
Class-6th from Kauhi village of Patan area of Durg district fell ill after inhaling toxic smoke from a brick kiln operating near the school.
The children complained of breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and vomiting, causing panic within the school premises. Upon learning of the incident, parents rushed to the school and, expressing their displeasure with the management, locked the school.
Villagers allege that the toxic smoke emanating from the kiln has been affecting the children's health for a long time, yet the administration has taken no concrete action.
Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, Block Education Officer (BEO) arrived at the scene and assessed the situation. The children were provided with first aid and as a precaution, the administration is preparing to temporarily conduct classes in the Samrasta Bhavan.
Villagers informed that a notice was previously issued to the brick kiln operator for its closure, but operations continue. Locals have accused the district administration of adopting a lax attitude.
Villagers and parents
have demanded the immediate closure of the brick kiln and regular health checkups of children.
It may be noted that after complaint of brick kilns operating near the school
premises of Government Primary School Kauhi an investigation was conducted and the complaint was found to be true. Pollution generated by the brick kiln's operation is adversely affecting children's health (physical and mental). A joint meeting of Gram Sabha, School Development Committee, and Gram Panchayat representatives was held and a ban was imposed on brick kilns. However, these kilns continue to operate till this day.
A letter was sent to the Patan SDM by the Patan District Education Officer on January 22, 2026, but the SDM has yet to take any action. In this regard, District Education Officer Arvind Singh stated that a complaint letter will be written directly to the Durg Collector, informing him of the situation, so that strict action can be taken against the kiln. He stated that the school is being operated by the government, so the school will remain in its original state and the brick kiln will have to be removed.
