The stage is set for a one-sided contest for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, as Congress Party threw its hat in the ring, hoping to put up a fight. The BJP has chosen to go with Neeta Thakre, a four time corporator from Prabhag 28 (C), for the post of Mayor. For the post of Deputy Mayor, the dominant BJP zeroed in on Leela Hatibed who has won from the Prabhag 29 (A). Two sets of nomination papers were submitted for Hatibed on the part of BJP. As to Congress Party, they have nominated Snehal Thakre from Prabhag 11, a first-timer to contest the post of Mayor. As to Deputy Mayor, the party has chosen Vivek Nikose, a corporator from Prabhag 9.

From the Congress, the Group Leader Sanjay Mahakalkar shouldered the responsibility of escorting the party nominees for submitting the papers.

Elections on February 6

The elections to the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled on February 6 in the maiden meeting of NMC’s new House at Suresh Bhat Hall, Reshimbag. The BJP has 102 members in the House of 151, plus it had pre-poll alliance with Shiv Sena (Shinde), who has one member elected. But, since the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit) has one member, she too is likely to go with ruling BJP as they share power in the State.

AIMIM may abstain AIMIM, which has 6 corporators

and IUML, with 4 members, may abstain from the voting during the election to post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, as they would like to keep equi-distance from both the major parties. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has lone representative in the House. Shiv Sena (UBT) has two members in the House and it remains to be seen whether they sail along with Congress or maintain a neutral stance. Earlier, the BJP group completed the formalities as to registration with the Divisional Commissioner. On Monday morning, the BJP corporators assembled in Civil Lines and submitted their common signed letter as to choosing Narendra alias Balya Borkar as their Group Leader. Borkar, who has been elected from East Nagpur Assembly segment, has been nominated by the BJP as Ruling Party Leader.
