The Congress Corporators on Monday organised a parallel House meeting of the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) at Naudra Bridge square to highlight water related and other civic issues, accusing the BJP-led ruling party of avoiding discussion in the official House. Leader of Opposition Amrish Mishra said the move was pressed by the ruling party’s failure to convene a special meeting under Section 30 of Municipal Corporation Act despite repeated demands. He said concern over drinking water quality has grown after the recent incident in Indore, where more than 30 people reportedly died due to contaminated water and several others are still undergoing treatment. The Congress corporators said citizens in the city are living in fear over the quality of drinking water being supplied to their homes.

They alleged that the requests seeking a clarification from the Mayor through a white paper on water issue were ignored. During the parallel House, Congress leaders played the role of Mayor, Speaker and Municipal Commissioner. The major issues raised included supply of foul smelling and contaminated drinking water through pipelines passing near drains, sewage flowing into river Narmada, alleged corruption in payment of outsourced employees’ wages, poor door-to-door garbage collection despite residents paying monthly charges, delays in corporators funded works, harassment of citizens during building plan approvals, alleged irregularities in vehicle and other purchases and problems faced by residents of leasehold areas. The corporators also highlighted employees related issues such as delays in compassionate appointments, medical advances, compensation payments and release of retirement dues.
