NAGPUR’S veteran badminton player Sharad Mahajan delivered an impressive performance to secure runner-up position in the 70+ men’s singles category at the 1st Masters National Selection Badminton Tournament held in Agra.
In a closely contested final, Mahajan fought valiantly but lost to Balbirsingh Jamwal 17-21,
18-21, thus finishing as the tournament’s runner-up.
Earlier, Mahajan began his campaign on a strong note by defeating Pramod Khanna of Uttarakhand 21-14, 21-13 in the first round. In the second round, he overcame Gurbaxsingh Juneja of Madhya Pradesh in straight sets, winning 22-20, 21-10.
Continuing his remarkable run, Mahajan outplayed Hasan Kamal Abidi in the quarter-finals 21-14, 21-7.
In the semis, he registered a decisive victory over Satpal Angurala of Haryana
21-17, 21-11.
His outstanding performance at the national-level tournament has brought pride to Nagpur and Vidarbha badminton circles. Notably, in the last fortnight, Mahajan had also won the title in the 70+ category tournament held at Nashik.
A former employee of Bank of Maharashtra, Mahajan was district champion for several years and served as treasurer of the Bankers’ Sports Council for over a decade.
Officials of the Bankers’ Sports Council congratulated him on this remarkable achievement.
