A 26-year-old resident doctor from the Ophthalmology Department of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) was found dead in a hotel room in Ganeshpeth area on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Rutwik Sagar Thakur, a resident of Chikhli in Buldhana district.
According to police, Rutwik allegedly died by suicide by hanging. Police said, the young doctor had been under mental stress for several days.
Rutwik had completed his MBBS from a medical college in Mumbai and had recently joined GMC&H. He arrived in Nagpur on January 27. As
he did not get accommodation in the hostel, he started staying at a hotel in the Ganeshpeth area.
On Monday, Rutwik did not report to the medical college.
When he could not be contacted on his mobile phone, the head of the Ophthalmology Department informed his father. His father also tried calling him but received no response. He then contacted the hotel manager and requested them to check the room.
A hotel staff member
went to Rutwik’s room and found the door locked
from inside. The Ganeshpeth Police were immediately informed. A police team reached the spot and broke open the door.
“After entering the room, we found the doctor hanging.
He was immediately brought down, but he was already dead,” said a senior police officer from the police station.
The police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting further investigation.
“We are checking all possible angles. Preliminary inquiry suggests he was under stress, but the exact reason will be known after investigation,” the officer added. Police also said that no suicide note has been found so far. Rutwik’s parents are both doctors, and his sister is also pursuing MBBS.
