Sanjay Kumar, a 2004 batch IPS officer, officially assumed charge as the new Police Commissioner of Bhopal on Monday. He succeeds outgoing Police Commissioner Harinarayanchari Mishra. The transition took place during a formal handover ceremony at the Police Commissioner’s office, where Kumar was accorded a guard of honour in the presence of zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Additional DCPs, and ACPs. Sanjay Kumar, who previously served as IG Balaghat, is the third Police Commissioner of the State capital. This marks his second stint in Bhopal, having previously served as SP Headquarters. Addressing the media, Kumar emphasised that his primary objective is to break the backbone of organised crime.

Urban policing in a State capital poses complex challenges, including frequent VIP movements and heavy traffic pressure,” Kumar stated. He added that he aims to make the police force more accountable to the public by fixing the responsibilities of gazetted officers and implementing innovations at the police station level. To combat the rising drug menace, the new Commissioner announced the formation of specialised units to dismantle illegal trade networks. He issued a stern warning that establishments such as clubs, lounges, and gyms would be placed under strict surveillance to prevent the expansion of drug networks in the city. Addressing the surge in online fraud, Kumar outlined a two-pronged strategy focusing on technical investigation and public awareness.

“While we will actively trace cybercriminals, educating citizens is the most essential tool to weaken these networks,” he remarked. Setting women’s safety as a top priority, the Commissioner announced that dedicated teams would be deployed for intensified patrolling in sensitive areas to curb incidents of harassment, molestation, and snatching. Kumar also stressed the importance of community-based policing. He plans to strengthen the beat system and ensure better co-ordination between the police and the common man. Furthermore, he highlighted that the police would conduct joint drives with the local administration to remove encroachments that hinder traffic flow and law and order in various colonies. Our focus will be on creating a bridge between the public and the police. By staying among the people and ensuring transparency, we will provide a safer environment for the citizens of Bhopal,” the Commissioner concluded.
