TEAM Vidarbha started off well in the prestigious All India National Open Ranking Bridge Tournament that got underway at the Institute of Engineers on Thursday. Vidarbha Bridge Association (VBA) is hosting the four-day tournament, one of the major tournaments in India’s bridge calendar, for the first time. Team Vidarbha and Spartans, two teams from the region, were among the top 16 at end of the opening day. Team Vidarbha, consisting of V Puranik, R Deshpande, M Luley and M Dutta, are at the 6th position while Spartans that include Jai Kanoria, D Mandpe, A Das, V Patki, A Nandanwar and S Khanzode from Nagpur, are occupying the 14th spot after six rounds. Two more rounds will be played before the pre-quarterfinalists are finalised.
 
All the last-16 teams would play in another hall that would help them concentrate in a much better way. Pairs events will be played on the third and fourth days of the national championship. As many as 38 teams from all over India are participating for accumulating ranking points. The other teams that complete the top-16 line-up are Tornatae, SD Associates, EISK, Mohota, Rampage, Kanha, Bangur Cement, Dhampur Sugar Mills, EA Bridge, Team Burzen, Sarlafibers, Manthani, Amanora and 16. Deep Adhar. At the outset, former Member of Parliament (MP) Ajay Sancheti inaugurated the event. Rajshree Tarkunde, Prasad Keni, BFI President; Debrata Roy, BFI Secretary; S Hastak, VBA President; Anilkumar Mohota, Secretary VBA; Rajeev Khandelwal, Anil Goenka, Chairman of Organising Committee were present on the dais.
