Neeta Thakre of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected 55th Mayor of Nagpur on Friday at the special meet of the new House of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) held at Suresh Bhat auditorium. Similarly, ruling BJP also triumphed in Deputy Mayor poll as its nominee Leela Hatibed was chosen, overcoming a lame challenge from Congress corporator. The entire process was held in-camera and District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar presided over the special meet, the first for the newly-elected corporators.

he outcome of the election was on expected lines given the comfortable majority with BJP. The election was held by show of hands and later, each corporator submitted his written vote. Neeta Thakre is a seasoned corporator, and this is her 4th term in the NMC House. She is also the first corporator from South Nagpur Assembly segment to be chosen as Mayor. She overcame the challenge of Congress nominee Snehal Thakre, bagging 104 votes, one more than the MahaYuti’s strength, as lone corporator of Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar) as expected went with the ruling block.

The BJP has 102 members plus 1 corporator is of pre-poll ally Shiv Sena (Shinde), so it had 103 votes already. The joining of ruling bandwagon on part of Abha Pande came on expected lines, as NCP (AP) is already a constituent of MahaYuti at State level, though in civic body election, they fought independently. The Congress nominee who represents Prabhag 11 in the House, could get just 36 votes, 34 of them were her party corporators and 2 from Shiv Sena (UBT) as they have formed Maha Vikas Aghadi
