In the flower markets of Nagpur, the approach of Valentine’s Day, beginning the week with Rose Day itself on February 7, has brought a three-time rise in the price of roses. The red rose -- a symbol of affection exchanged on February 14 -- has seen its price climbs sharply in recent days. This has placed the traditional romantic gesture beyond easy reach for many. Piyush Sudeep Ranjankar, Owner, Fragrance Flowers, Ramdaspeth, explained in details the price shift observed in the previous week. He said roses were priced at around Rs 7.5 to Rs 10 per stem just weeks ago. Now the same roses cost approximately Rs 22.5 to Rs 25 per stem.

The finest quality roses have reached about Rs 30 per stem. Other rose varieties that retailers sold at about Rs 10 per stem have now increased to roughly Rs 40 to Rs 42.50 per stem. Piyush sources his material from wholesale flower markets in Pune and Bengaluru, and he projected that as Valentine’s Day nears, wholesale per-stem rates could rise toward Rs 50, based on seasonal patterns he has observed. To understand the causes of the same requires us to dive into the wholesale world. Jayant Rannavare, President, Mahatma Phule Pushpa Utpadak Association, explained that two factors have converged to create this year’s price surge.

He shared that the cold winter season naturally slows down flower production while at the same time, Valentine’s Day export demands from India increases; when these pressures combine, local supply becomes tighter, and prices rise in retail. Rannavare noted that earlier in the season, roses were available at about Rs 20 per stem wholesale; they have now climbed to about Rs 40 per stem wholesale. India’s position as both a significant producer and high consumer of flowers adds complexity. Rannavare said regular religious and ceremonial flower consumption remains high year-round, and when Valentine’s demand builds on top of this, the market doubles in activity. A key local factor, Rannavare said, is support form agriculture and floriculture initiatives in Nagpur, giving the example of Shishir Diote’s farms. The highest demand during this Valentine’s period continues to be for roses, and as the day approaches, these now premium flowers -- crimson, pink, white, orange and other colours -- wait in abundance in market stalls and shop windows.
