Raipur :
In a sustained enforcement drive aimed at curbing drunken driving and reducing road accidents, the Raipur Police Commissionerate’s Traffic Wing has taken action against 614 drivers found driving under the influence of alcohol over the past 10 days, officials said.
The campaign is being carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Protocol) Vikas Kumar, with teams conducting checks at key intersections and busy roads across
the city. According to traffic police officials, the drive is part of a broader effort to reduce road accidents in Raipur. Authorities noted that around 600 people lose their lives in road accidents in the city every year, with drunken driving cited as one of the major contributing factors. As part of the crackdown, traffic personnel have been conducting breathalyser checks and vehicle inspections at multiple checkpoints across the city.
The operation intensified on March 8, when special checking was carried out at six different points in the Telibandha police station area. During the one-day operation in Telibandha alone, 86 drivers were found driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said. Police added that the drive has not been limited to ordinary vehicles, with luxury cars such as Audi and BMW also among those caught during the checks. The vehicles were intercepted during routine inspection drives conducted by traffic police teams. Officials said the enforcement campaign will continue in the coming days as part of a sustained effort to ensure safer roads in the State capital. The traffic police have urged citizens to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and to follow road safety norms. Authorities said responsible driving is essential to prevent accidents and ensure safety for both drivers and pedestrians. Police also appealed to motorists to maintain safe speeds and strictly comply with traffic regulations while using city roads.
